Job description:

Specific Job Responsibility

1. Organize and supervise the fire crew

  • Anticipate fire crew needs and solve them,
  • Establish and maintain shift manning levels,
  • Assess fire behavior and initiate attack methods on approach to fire situations,
  • Ensure proper fire suppression techniques are employed, and Ensure safety is practiced by all crew members at all times Inspect and test all rescue equipment and maintain their cleanliness
  • Evaluate the crew’s performance,
  • Maintain order and discipline in the team,
  • Solve all problems and queries brought to attention by subordinates,
  • Supervise and attend to all medical related incidents in the mine and outside the mine,

2. Maintain firefighting and ER equipment

  • Instruct crew on testing, maintenance, and repair of all firefighting and rescue equipment as per standard operating procedure and schedules,
  • Carry out preventative maintenance of fire and rescue equipment,
  • Supervise the cleaning, repair, and maintenance of fire and rescue equipment
  • Identify faulty equipment and carry out necessary repairs,
  • Carry out inspections of all firefighting equipment installed on the mine,
  • Carry out inspection and maintenance of all first aid, and eye wash station equipment installed on the mine,
  • Carrying out inspections of fire equipment installed on all the mining mobile fleet and Light Vehicles,

3. Participate and train fire crews

  • Assist Superiors in the training of ERT crew members,
  • Participate in required fire safety training sessions on the mine,
  • Evaluate crew members to identify training needs,

4. Participate in the Fire, Rescue, and Medical Services

  • Lead ERT crew members to all fire, rescue, and medical incidents
  • Take charge of incidents in the absence of Superiors,
  • Operate all emergency vehicles in a safe manner when the need arises,
  • Make random topography of the mine site to familiarization himself and the team,
  • Maintain all emergency communication facilities in good working order,
  • Generate detailed preliminary reports for fire, EMS, aviation standbys, and other special service tasks completed,
  • Conduct shift mock drills for the crew,
  • Allocate ERT members their manning levels in an event of an emergency,
  • Conduct debriefing with crew members for all incidents attended.

5. Perform administrative duties

  • Attend daily pre-shift meetings with the ERT Supervisor,
  • Prepare various daily reports to the ERT Supervisor,
  • Conduct daily shift parade and toolbox safety meeting
  • Plan daily shift tasks and training,
  • Maintain a log for all firefighting equipment in his/her area of inspection

6. Perform other related duties as required

  • Save and protect life, and property and render humanitarian services,
  • Lead ERT crew to respond quickly to all unforeseen circumstances as they arise to prevent loss of life, property, and environment.
  • Supervise safe handling of venomous snakes and other reptiles, capture and safe release Supervise handling of bees from plant and mobile equipment for the safety of mine employees

Job Specific Competencies

  • At least 3-5 years of experience in a relevant field preferably in the mining industry,
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the personnel of the Department,
  • Extensive knowledge of the geography of the Trident mining area,
  • Thorough knowledge of fire prevention practices, emergency medical first responders, firefighting and rescue techniques, and the scientific principles involved in fire suppression and fire behavior,
  • Considerable knowledge of explosives, hazardous properties, and potential reactions of chemicals, liquids, and gases as well as the combustion qualities of materials used in the construction of commercial and residential buildings and above-ground storage tanks
  • Considerable knowledge of the use of firefighting tools and equipment
  • Considerable knowledge of teaching methods and the ability to train and instruct ERT personnel and mine employees,
  • Ability to recognize existing or potential fire hazards in a wide variety of structures or installations.
  • The ability to evaluate fires recognizes the danger and takes the necessary action for the protection of lives and property.
  • Ability to recognize signs and symptoms of unsafe building conditions under fire conditions and when interior operations should cease.
  • Ability to communicate clearly on radio or mobile data communication devices
  • Ability to express ideas clearly, concisely, orally, and in writing to groups and individuals.
  • Oral and written communication skills necessary for accurate documentation of various required reports,
  • Ability to utilize computerized record-keeping programs
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of building construction
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise activities of subordinate personnel.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Minimum 2-3 years experience in a supervisory role preferably in the mining industry,
  • Possess knowledge of all fire control and rescue practices and policies,
  • Possess knowledge of emergency response procedures,
  • The incumbent must possess the following qualifications;
  • Grade 12 certificate with merits in English, Science, and Mathematics
  • Having Passed Fire Service Statutory Examinations Leading Fire-Fighter, Sub/Officers, Station Fire Officer or equivalent FF1, FF2 or IFE qualifications level 3 Certificate,
  • Basic Life Support (BLS),
  • International Trauma Life Support (ITLS),
  • Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus Certificate (SCBA),
  • Vehicle Extrication Certificate,
  • Hazmat training for first responders Certificate, Awareness, and Operational levels
  • Confined Space Rescue,
  • First aid for mining Certificate,
  • Rope Rescue Technician/High angle Rescue certificate,
  • Incident Commander
  • Fire Services Instructor
  • Class C Driver’s License,
  • Other Fire and Rescue Qualifications
