GIS Technician Biocarbon Partners

BCP is a leading African REDD+ Developer and conservation organization which seeks to sustainably finance wildlife and habitat conservation through the forest carbon markets. BCP’s mission is “making conservation of wildlife habitat valuable to people”. We work with Community and Government partners to help improve the conservation management of over 1 million hectares of globally significant wildlife habitats in Zambia, benefiting over 225,000 people.

BCP is recruiting for Geographic Information System (GIS) Technicians x 2 to support BCP into a new phase of project development, conservation technology developments and impact monitoring. The primary responsibility Job Overview: The GIS Technician is responsible for a range of tasks to support the Carbon team which is responsible for achieving VCS and CCB verifications, pre-viability and feasibility studies, biodiversity monitoring, and database management. These tasks are related to the technical aspects of the abovementioned activities and in particular spatial data management, map making and GIS and remote sensing analysis.

STUFF WE’LL TRUST YOU WITH.

  • GIS and RS analysis and map-making as instructed.
  • Training of interns, FD members, CFMG members and other BCP staff in basics of GIS, RS and map-making according to instructions.
  • Ground- truth of various GIS and RS layers and data when needed and as per instruction.
  • Technical input into maps to be published on the website (i.e. web mapping).
  • Assist the Forest Monitoring Team Coordinator with various tasks relating to the administration and coordination of the Forest Monitoring Team.
  • Assist with departmental data management activities, including data cleaning, ODK and Metabase management as well as SMART data cleaning and management.
  • Assist with historic deforestation analysis using open source OPTICAL, RADAR and multispectral imagery data in Google Earth Engine.

  • Qualification; Relevant Degree with specialization in GIS and remote sensing, Forestry or Biodiversity Management.

  • Ability to work under often tight deadlines, and accept frequent change in a high pressure and fast paced work environment;
  • Strong commitment to BCP’s success and mission;
  • Good self-organization, thoroughness and attention to detail.
