UP Zambia Psycho-social Counsellor/Social Worker
JOB DESCRIPTION
- Provide counselling to child clients and families
- Collect data about clients through assessments, case history, psychological tests, and/or
observational techniques; evaluate data to identify causes of problems and to determine
proper therapeutic approach or referral to other specialists. - Provide casework management of specialized caseloads
- Provide and/or arrange for therapeutic interventions as appropriate for clients with serious
disturbance or mental illnesses. - Make regular follow ups with clients to determine effectiveness of interventions used; make
recommendations regarding modification to services and service delivery. - Network and build relationships with other organisations providing social support services
- Consult with other therapists and related professional staff, as appropriate, in the
performance of therapeutic and/or casework; refer clients to appropriate services within the
organisation as required. - Presenting/assisting in workshops.
- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
CANDIDATE SPECIFICATION
- Competent computer skills in MS Office
- Excellent communication and reporting skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of case management.
- Knowledge and understanding of clinical counselling principles, programs and methodology.
- Interviewing and psychological/developmental evaluation skills.
- Knowledge and understanding of mental health and mental illnesses
- Ability to evaluate the progress of therapeutic programs and to make individual
modifications. - Ability to maintain emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies, and other
stresses. - Knowledge of psychological test administration, scoring, and interpretation.
- Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to patients’ rights.
- The ability to work with minimal supervision
- The ability to work in, and adapt to, challenging environments
- Experience working with vulnerable children and youth
- An approachable style of working with others to achieve successful outcomes
- Preparedness to work outside normal working hours when required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Counselling/ Psychology, Social Work, or any related field from an
accredited institution - At least 1 year of directly related experience which may include internship and/or practicum
- Fluent in English and Nyanja, additional local languages an advantage
- Candidate must be willing to travel outside of Lusaka
- Initial contract will run for 6 months.
