EMPLOYEMNT OPPORTUNITY – AGRICULTURE MANAGER.
Brief
Traditionally, Agriculture Managers learn their job skills by practically working on a farm, but it’s
becoming increasingly important to obtain formal training along with real-life experience.
Responsibilities
Agricultural Manager (also known as Farm Manager) will be responsible for; – (1) Planning,
Supervising and Project management of work on the farms, so that the business is profitable.
Typical duties include:-
Forward planning to make sure that orders can be met – for example, ensuring that
enough farm workers will be available at key times and the equipment needed is in
working order.
Budgeting and maintaining accurate agribusiness records.
Organizing sales and purchases of livestock, farm equipment, crops and agricultural
products.
Hands-on tasks such as feeding animals and other livestock.
Recruiting, training and supervising farm workers, both permanent and seasonal.
Making sure that work is done safely and in time to meet targets and customer orders.
Ensuring compliance with government regulations and health and safety standards.
Keeping an up-to-date knowledge of pests and diseases, in the farming sector.
Responding to emergencies and solving problems effectively.
Ensuring that the farm is profitable and meets projected financial targets.
Organizing maintenance/repair of farm property, equipment and machinery.
Advertising and marketing farm products and ensuring deliveries to retailing points, is
executed timely and acceptable.
Organizing and formulating harvesting schedule, post-harvest activities and grain
management including; handling, storage and distribution to our clients
You’re likely to have to work some unsociable hours, especially during busy periods such
as; – harvesting or lambing, although some times of year will be quieter.
Qualifications
The Prospective Agricultural Manager should have pursued atleast;-
Bachelor’s degree programs in; Agriculture or related fields, such as farm management,
agricultural economics and dairy science.
Those who have worked with crops (both food and cash crops),with a deep
understanding of effective growing techniques and plant diseases and working with
livestock or dairy or veterinary science, will be given upper preference.
Irrigation Engineering Certificate from University of Zambia or any internationally
accredited college, with five years’ work experience, will be a great added advantage.
Diploma Knowledge and Experience of how to grow cash crops such as; Tobacco,
Wheat, Tomatoes, Soybeans and Maize, is a must.
Diploma in Mechanical Engineering of; John Deere / Massey Ferguson tractors and
Centre Pivot Irrigation.
Must be aged 30 years and above, with a clean valid SADC Driver’s License.
