Zambian Carnivore Programme is non-governmental registered trust whose vision is a restored and thriving ecosystem that are collaboratively conserved by local communities, scientists, and policy-makers through evidence-based approaches. With the mission to conserve Zambia’s large carnivores and the ecosystem they reside in through science, action, strengthening local leadership and promoting coexistence, ZCP wishes to recruit a Human Carnivore Conflict (HCC) Officer.
Human carnivore conflict is an increasing threat to the existence large carnivores across the globe and the Luangwa valley is no exception. The ZCP Human Carnivore Conflict (HCC) mitigation program’s ultimate goal is to see to it that the cost of coexistence is reduced for communities, with communities able to effectively manage wildlife and become more appreciative of the value of conservation.
The HCC officer will work closely with various partners, stakeholders, communities, CRBs and local leadership to implement ZCPs HCC mitigation programs. He/she will report to the Human Carnivore Conflict Coordinator.
Key Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of the HCC Officer position include but are not restricted to:
- Conducting surveys with local communities.
- Collecting data on carnivore conflict and effectiveness of mitigation efforts.
- Work with HCC coordinator to conduct outreach activities (workshops and meetings) targeted at reducing human carnivore conflict.
- Assisting the coordinator with reporting requirements.
- Assist in distribution of educational materials on carnivore conservation and reducing livestock predation.
- Monitor construction of predator proof fences and pig pens in conflict hotspots.
- Represent ZCP in community meetings.
- Assist in the maintenance of project equipment.
- Participate in all ZCP HCC operations as needed and assigned.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
- Education and Experience
- Formal qualification in the wildlife and conservation field
- Experience working with rural communities on natural resource management and conservation issues.
- BSc in Wildlife Management or any related field would be an added advantage
- A valid motor vehicle or motor bike license would be an added advantage
Skills:
- Able to read, write and communicate effectively in English and Nyanja
- Excellent computer skills and proficiency in the MS Office suite
- Researching skills; collecting, verifying analyzing and presenting data
- Great report writing skills.
- Knowledge of operation area (South Luangwa NP and surrounding GMAs).
- Knowledge and understanding of social issues and how public sector bodies work
- Exemplary interpersonal, negotiating and networking skills
