Our client who is a well-established school just outside of Lusaka is looking for a Lab Technician.
The demands of the Science curriculum can only be delivered in an appropriate manner when an adequate level of trained technical support is available. Well trained Science Technicians make an important contribution towards the quality of teaching and learning. The availability of their technical advice and non-teaching support assists and influences the effective delivery of practical programmes and open-ended investigative science teaching.
The Science Laboratory Technician is a full and valued member of the Science Faculty and is invited to take part in all faculty activities including attending relevant meetings.
The Science Laboratory Technician is encouraged to update his knowledge and skills as the demands on him/her change, particularly regarding health and safety. The areas in which development is required are made known to the Head of Science Faculty who arranges adequate INSET in liaison with the school administration.
JOB DESCRIPTION OF A SCIENCE LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
The responsibilities of a Science Laboratory Technician include:
- Consulting with Science staff on their needs for practical work and maintaining an efficient system for use and allocation of materials and equipment and setting a priority system.
- Assisting Science teaching staff with demonstrations during the lessons.
- Assisting Science teaching staff in instructing students on use/care of equipment during science experiments.
- Advising and assisting Science teaching staff on safety matters relating to the Science laboratory.
- Preparing risk assessments in relation to practical tasks.
- Preparing standard solutions for use in the laboratory.
- Preparing apparatus, solutions, specimens for use during final examination practicals.
- Maintaining a safe chemical storage, handling, and disposal system in accordance with current guidelines and regulations.
- Assisting with the security of the science laboratory equipment, chemicals, and specimens.
- Maintaining an inventory of equipment, chemicals, specimens, and textbooks.
- Acquiring relevant catalogues and price lists of various apparatus, equipment, chemicals, and specimens.
- Assisting with labelling, storage, stocktaking, and ordering equipment and chemicals.
- Servicing and cleaning of laboratory apparatus and equipment.
- Developing maintenance procedure for laboratory equipment.
- Attending appropriate Professional Development courses.
- Collecting off campus scientific materials and field samples.
- Assisting with Science budgeting
- Evaluating and selecting equipment, apparatus, and specimens and making recommendations to the Head of Science faculty.
