Operations Manager A Transport and Logistics Company

A multi-sector commodity Logistics and Transport Company that provides highly professional and ethical solutions seeks to recruit an experienced Operations Manager to lead and optimize our Logistics and Transportation operations with a reporting line to the Chief Executive Officer. The Position is based at our head office in Lusaka.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in logistics and transportation management, demonstrating strategic leadership and operational expertise in the industry. The ideal candidate will lead in a way that supports the Company’s vision and strategy while embodying the corporate purpose.

This position requires a leader who can call upon a diverse range of skills and experiences to support transportation operations

The main responsibilities of the Operations Manager include:

Strategic Leadership:

  • Develop and execute operational strategies aligned with the company’s objectives, driving efficiency and profitability in the logistics and transportation services.

Team Management:

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of logistics and transportation managers, supervisors, and operational staff, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration.

Organisational Development:

  • Designing, implementing, and overseeing organization development policies and programs to improve company performance
  • Planning, developing, and administering training and development programs for employees
  • Acting as a liaison and advisor to the organization’s leadership and facilitating initiatives across the organization
  • Evaluating existing policies, practices, and systems and recommending improvements
  • Managing the implementation of change management processes and initiatives

Fleet Management:

  • Oversee the management of the transportation fleet, ensuring proper maintenance, utilization, and compliance with regulations.

Route Optimization:

  • Implement strategies to optimize transportation routes, minimize costs, and improve delivery timelines while maintaining service quality.

Vendor and Partner Relations:

  • Cultivate and manage relationships with vendors, carriers, and partners, negotiating contracts and ensuring service level agreements are met.

Performance Monitoring:

  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate the efficiency of transportation operations, analyzing data to identify areas for improvement.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with transportation regulations, safety standards, and industry requirements across all operations.
  • Supporting regulatory and internal audits of operations
  • Working with the safety leader to ensure compliance of outbound transportation with federal, state, and local government regulations (e.g., driver logs, DOT regulations, etc.)

Budgeting and Cost Control:

  • Develop and manage transportation budgets, monitor expenses, and implement cost-saving measures without compromising service quality.
  • Creating an environment full of care, safety, and excellence, an environment where overnight delivery drivers do their best work
  • Designing effective communication strategies to reach drivers daily
  • Leading daily scheduling for outbound transportation operations
  • Evaluating operational results and communicating those results to senior
  • Transportation and DC leadership
  • Coordinating and communicating outbound transportation equipment needs to local vehicle maintenance teams
  • Delivering industry-leading on-time delivery and customer satisfaction rates

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or related field (Master’s degree is preferred).
  • 8 years of progressive experience in transportation management or a related field, with a proven track record in operational leadership.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of transportation operations, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Proficiency in transportation management software and familiarity with route optimization tools.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and guide teams effectively.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
