JOB PURPOSE
The Data Manager which is a middle management position– Research is overall responsible for database development and data management for UNC Global Project Zambia (UNC GPZ) activities. Data management encompasses the complete data process from data entry at the facility level through data cleaning and curating and culminating in analysis-ready datasets. This individual will manage study-specific datasets, help to design and implement new data capture tools (as appropriate), and oversee data quality assurance / quality control activities. The Data Manager will coordinate data management tasks across studies by providing oversight across data teams, improving reporting effectiveness and enforcing data management policies in the organization. The Data Manager will support the capacity development of junior Data Managers, Data Coordinators, and Data Technicians across the organization. This will include regular reviews of their work products as well as hands-on training as indicated. The Data Manager will report to and closely work with the Data Systems Director and study Principal Investigators for various projects within the organization.
MAIN DUTIES
Software and Database Development
Become proficient with software systems used in current and future study databases
Develop database systems in collaboration with the study investigators
Oversee the design and programming of data capture forms
Assist with implementation of various data systems and coordinate quality control/quality assurance activities Supervise data personnel during system implementation, including training in data entry
Develop a code versioning strategy and ensure that good documentation of coding tables is maintained at the site for all data systems
Ensure existing data systems are functioning optimally at all times
Collaborate with ICT teams to integrate data systems with existing organizational infrastructure with the data reporting framework
Data Management
Overall responsible for the maintenance of accurate, complete, and current study databases for supported projects and facilities under UNC GPZ
Maintain up-to-date raw databases for all GPZ studies
Troubleshoot and resolve errors in database builds and/or data exports
Communicate any changes made to or problems encountered with the study database to the study sponsor
Maintain up-to-date documentation on study data systems and flow, including:
(1) Data dictionary
(2) Annotated programming code or other documentation as indicated
(3) Data map for external data exports
(4) Study-specific Data Management SOPs
Prepare highly accurate datasets for export and upload to external partners and study sponsors including those requiring data mapping
Prepare and provide analysis dataset exports for trainees and investigators in a timely manner
Ensure meticulous review of all data exports for quality and accuracy
Coordinate and lead the design, implementation, and revision of regular quality assurance and quality control reports
Lead a team of data personnel to generate high quality, cleaned datasets for data analysis
Maintain cleaned data sets across the organization.
Oversee development of regular data reports and/or live dashboards to monitor actual enrollment and retention rate, weekly and monthly (cumulative, and compared to targets)
Oversee development and accuracy of monthly reports on completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of data collection
Provide time-sensitive data reports to investigators for data readouts and as requests arise
Oversee development, implementation, and appropriateness of weekly internal data queries
Oversee review and responses to data quality reports generated by study sponsor(s) and make corrections where necessary
Ensure that all data-related queries are resolved within an agreed time frame
With Lab and Data Director, develop data management and quality assurance plan for GPZ Biorepository (stored specimens)
Oversee the development of regular reports for Specimen Storage Completeness from LDMS
Develop additional reports, dashboards, and/or QAQC procedures related to laboratory data as needed
With Data Director, support the development of GPZ wide Data Management SOP
Supervision
With the Data Director, participate in the recruitment, selection, and performance evaluation of Data Managers, Data Associates, and Data Technicians
Routinely review work products of reporting data team members, provide feedback and training as necessary to improve the quality and accuracy of study data
Other
Regularly meet with study teams (including Study Coordinator(s), Research Manager (s), and data personnel to ensure full knowledge of current study procedures, upcoming changes, and ensure data systems are meeting study needs
Regularly join and proactively participate in GPZ-wide and study-specific meetings and/or calls
Lead presentations to study sponsors on Data Management in coordination with the Data Director
Communicate complex data concepts to non-technical stakeholders in a clear and concise manner
Maintain regular communication with key team members on data-related topics
Attend and contribute to workshops, conferences, and other meetings as requested
Attend to any other duties as required to ensure the accurate and confidential management of UNC Project Zambia data
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Masters Degree in Epidemiology, Computer Science, or a related field
Relevant experience, e.g., in data management for clinical research: 8 years (with Masters)
Highly proficient in STATA or SAS programming languages
Highly proficient in SQL, VBA and other database software
Experience with REDCap strongly preferred
