Job Title: Accountant
Location: Lusaka, Zambia
Reports To: General Manager or Owner
Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Accountant to manage the financial operations of our small furniture manufacturing company. The ideal candidate will oversee day-to-day accounting activities, maintain accurate financial records, and ensure compliance with relevant regulations. This role requires a hands-on professional who can handle everything from bookkeeping to financial analysis in a manufacturing setting.
Key Responsibilities
1. Financial Accounting and Reporting
Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records, including the general ledger, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (e.g., income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement).
Analyze financial data to identify trends, variances, and potential issues.
2. Budgeting and Cost Control
Develop and monitor the company’s annual budget in collaboration with management.
Track and analyze production costs, material expenses, and labor costs to ensure cost efficiency.
Recommend cost-saving measures and identify opportunities to improve profitability.
3. Inventory and Production Accounting
Oversee inventory management processes, including recording raw materials, work-in-progress (WIP), and finished goods.
Monitor stock levels to avoid overstocking or stockouts and assist in inventory reconciliations.
Calculate the cost of goods sold (COGS) and maintain accurate inventory valuation records.
4. Tax and Compliance
Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal tax laws and regulations.
Prepare and file tax returns, VAT/GST, payroll taxes, and other required reports.
Maintain proper documentation for audits and liaise with external auditors or tax authorities as needed.
5. Payroll and Employee Payments
Process payroll for staff, including production workers and office employees.
Manage employee benefits, deductions, and statutory payments.
Ensure compliance with labor laws and regulations.
6. Cash Flow and Banking
Monitor cash flow to ensure sufficient funds for operational needs.
Reconcile bank statements regularly and handle banking transactions, including deposits, transfers, and loan payments.
Manage accounts receivable collections and accounts payable disbursements.
7. Financial Systems and Software
Utilize accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero, or other ERP systems) to record and process transactions.
Ensure the system is up-to-date and customized to support the specific needs of a furniture manufacturing business.
8. Management Support
Provide financial insights and recommendations to support business decisions.
Assist with pricing strategies by analyzing costs and market trends.
Prepare reports and presentations for management meetings.
9. Internal Controls
Implement and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard company assets.
Develop policies and procedures to ensure accurate and reliable financial reporting.
Qualifications and Skills
Educational Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Experience:
At least 2-3 years of experience in accounting, preferably in a manufacturing or production environment.
Familiarity with cost accounting principles is a plus.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, or an ERP system).
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel for financial analysis and reporting.
Understanding of inventory accounting and production cost analysis.
Soft Skills:
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Working Conditions
