Brief Description

A security guard, also known as a security officer, is responsible for protecting property and personnel by patrolling designated areas, monitoring surveillance systems, controlling access points, investigating suspicious activity, and responding to emergencies, all while enforcing security policies and reporting any incidents to the appropriate authorities; essentially, they maintain a safe and secure environment by deterring criminal activity and ensuring compliance with regulations.

Key responsibilities of a security guard:

Patrolling premises:

Regularly walking around assigned areas to check for potential security breaches, unauthorized access, and suspicious behavior.

Access control:

Verifying identification of visitors and employees, managing entry and exit points, and ensuring only authorized individuals are allowed access.

Surveillance monitoring:

Actively observing security cameras and other monitoring systems to identify potential threats.

Incident reporting:

Documenting any suspicious activity, security breaches, or unusual occurrences and reporting them to the appropriate personnel.

Emergency response:

Responding promptly to alarms, disturbances, and emergencies, including contacting emergency services when necessary.

Investigating incidents:

Conducting investigations into suspicious activity, potential security breaches, and property damage.

Enforcing security policies:

Ensuring compliance with established security protocols and company rules.

Maintaining logs:

Keeping detailed records of activities, observations, and incidents.

Customer service:

Interacting with visitors and employees in a professional manner, providing directions and assistance when needed.

Required skills for a security guard:

  • Observational skills: Ability to pay close attention to details and identify potential threats.
  • Communication skills: Clear and effective communication with colleagues, visitors, and authorities.
  • Decision-making abilities: Ability to assess situations quickly and make sound judgments in emergency situations.
  • Physical fitness: Capability to perform walking and standing patrols for extended periods.
  • Attention to detail: Diligent in recording observations and maintaining accurate documentation.

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 Certificate
  • Effective communication abilities.
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Physical fitness
  • A clean criminal background check
