Role Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated Agriculture Officer to lead the establishment and operation of our new farm in Chongwe. This is an exciting opportunity to build a farm from the ground up, implement best practices, and contribute to our company’s growth. The successful candidate will have a clear career progression path from Agriculture Officer to Agriculture Manager and eventually Chief Agriculture Officer based on performance.
Key Responsibilities
Farm Planning & Development
Conduct site assessments and develop a comprehensive farm plan, including crop selection, layout, and infrastructure setup.
Plan and implement irrigation systems, soil management techniques, and pest control strategies to ensure optimal crop yield.
Work with engineers and builders to implement modern yet affordable construction methods, including interlocking blocks and solar-powered boreholes.
Operations & Resource Management
Oversee all farm activities, including planting, harvesting, post-harvest handling, and record-keeping.
Recruit, train, and supervise farm workers (both permanent and seasonal).
Monitor and manage farm resources such as water, soil, inputs, and farm equipment to ensure efficiency and sustainability.
Organize sales and purchases of livestock, crops, and farm equipment.
Ensure compliance with health, safety, and government regulations.
Farm Expansion & Innovation
Establish piggeries, poultry farms, animal pens (cows, goats, sheep), and fish ponds.
Implement modern greenhouse technology and experiment with new crops such as sunflower and millet.
Set up and maintain orchards (lemons, bananas, guavas, mangoes, pawpaws) and vegetable farms (cabbage, cassava, onions, tomatoes, spices like garlic, green pepper, black pepper, and chili).
Develop a structured farm layout, including a caretaker’s house, farm manager’s house, worker quarters, storage facilities, and a farm entertainment area.
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Farm Management, or a related field.
Experience in crop production, soil science, pest management, and livestock farming.
Knowledge of maize farming in Zambia is essential.
Diploma or Certificate in Irrigation Engineering (University of Zambia or an internationally accredited institution) with at least five years’ experience is an added advantage.
Diploma in Mechanical Engineering with expertise in John Deere/Massey Ferguson tractors and Centre Pivot Irrigation is a plus.
Must be 30 years or older with a valid SADC Driver’s License.
